Workouts for Six Pack Abs

It is not enough to exercise your abdominals in order to attain great six packs. You need to complement your abs workouts with obliques exercises like the oblique crunch and the bicycle kick.

A complete washboard look consists of your six pack abdominals found at the center of your belly and the obliques which form the outer frame of your abs. While there are many abdominal exercises that also strengthen and stretch the obliques, there are exercises that specifically target and tone these muscles alone.

Bicycle Kick

Considered an intermediate form of exercise, you can do bicycle kicks continuously for a full minute or for longer durations depending upon your physical capabilities.

Start by lying on the floor with your knees raised and feet straight. Keep your back straight with your arms position on either side of your head. Pull your head, upper chest, and abs up while kicking your legs alternately back and forth as though riding a bike. As you kick your legs, you perform continuous crunches, so that your abs remain flexed and your obliques rotate the crunching action in a swift alternating motion.

Oblique Crunch

The oblique crunch is commonly performed as a complement to standard sit-ups and crunches. This exercise specifically targets the sides of the upper body, so that you crunch the obliques in the same way that you work out your abs with the abdominal crunch.

Start by lying flat on your side. The legs are straight out with one leg on top of the other. You should be lying against one arm and one side of your upper body. With your free top arm, support the side of your head like you would in an abdominal crunch.

Do the oblique crunch on the side of your abdomen that is facing up. As you contract your obliques, draw your upper body toward your legs as far as you can go. Simultaneously raise your straight legs toward your upper body. Do this exercise by crunching both your abs and obliques for a double crunch workout.
